Cub Club is Bear Valley’s comprehensive children’s lesson center and is the perfect place to introduce your 4 to 12 year-old to the thrills of skiing and snowboarding. Small lesson groups are divided based on age and ability, then paired with an enthusiastic instructor to embark on a snowy adventure.

Cub Club is open 7 days a week and offers Full-Day and Afternoon lessons. Full Day Lessons include  4 hours of instruction, equipment rental, a lift ticket, and a complimentary bag lunch. Afternoon Lessons are 1 hour and 45 minutes of instruction and do not include equipment rental or a lift ticket. A lift ticket and ski/ snowboard equipment are required for all lessons and must be purchased separately for the Afternoon Lesson (included with the Full Day Lesson).

Cub Club has its own carpet lift to provide a playful and uncrowded area devoted exclusively to children’s lessons.  Snacks and lunch are provided for all Cub Club Full Day Lessons and vegetarian and peanut allergy options are available.

Cub Club instructors are professionally trained and encourage children to ski and snowboard in a controlled manner with confidence and a smile. Cub Club lessons are purposefully kept small to enable a positive learning environment for your child. Our goal is to instill a passion for snow sports and create lifelong skiers and snowboarders.

Disclaimer: It is recommended that children are comfortable with group environments and being away from their parents. Children must be able to use the washrooms alone. Instructors will help children with outer layers (jacket, zippers etc.) but any base layers are the responsibility of the student. Click here for “first timer tips”

Lesson cancellations and rescheduling can be made by emailing lessons@bearvalley.com at least 48 hours prior to the day of the scheduled lesson. Cancellations will be charged a $25 per lesson cancellation fee. Any cancellation requests received within 48 hours of the date of the lesson will not be refunded.

Additional Cub Club Info

Which lesson to choose?

There are three lesson options for children at Bear Valley. Full Day Lesson programs are offered through Cub Club, while Private and Child Afternoon lessons use the regular rental department as needed and meet their instructors outside in the lesson meeting area.

Full Day Lessons are offered 7 days a week and include 4 hours of instruction, equipment rental, a lift ticket, and a to-go lunch. Check-in for Full Day Lessons by 9:15 AM at the lesson desk in the Lower Breezeway if your child is renting equipment or by 9:45 AM if your child already has their gear. Pick-up time is at 2:45 PM.  In between your child will be given an initial skills assessment, placed in a group, head out to the snow for warm-up exercises and skills development appropriate for the class, receive instruction, and have a lunch break before heading back out on the snow for more afternoon instruction and fun. Most kids are pretty tired by the time pick-up time arrives.

Please keep in mind your child’s stamina for physical activities and ability to be in a new environment for the day. For some children, especially 4 and 5 year olds, our Full Day Lesson can be challenging physically and emotionally. Please consider signing up for our Child Afternoon Lessons for a more relaxed pace and time commitment.

Child Afternoon Lessons are available 7 days a week. Check-in time is 12:15 PM at the Lesson Desk in the Lower Breezeway for children renting equipment. Check-in for children that will be using their own equipment is 12:45 PM at the Lesson Desk in the Lower Breezeway. Pick up from the lesson is at 2:45 PM. This lesson does not include rental equipment or a lift ticket. A lift ticket and ski/ snowboard equipment are required for all lessons and must be purchased separately for the Afternoon Child Lesson.

Ability Levels

Cub Club offers beginner and novice group lessons:

Beginner – First or second time participating in the sport (skiing or snowboarding). Starting with the basics either as a refresher or after an absence from the activity. Beginners will learn to glide, stop, and change directions.

Intermediate - The student has been skiing/boarding before and is ready for the chair. Students will learn different turning styles while controlling speed on multiple terrain types and explore both green and blue terrain.

*Children whose level is more advanced than Intermediate (as described above) cannot be accomdated in our Cub Club Full Day and Childrens Afternoon Lesson programs. Children more advanced than Intermediate can only be accommodated in our Private Lesson program.

Any misrepresentation of a child's abilities that results in dissatisfaction of any kind with the instruction a child receives will not be considered for a refund or compensation of any kind. No exceptions.

Staff and instructors will evaluate skills before and during a lesson. Class adjustments may be made during the lesson, but commonly this happens after lunch. We recommended that parents be conservative when assessing a child's ability level at the time of registration; it is easier for us to move a child up in ability level than down during a lesson. A child's skill level can change with snow conditions.

Cub Club Lunch

We strive to provide good food that children will eat and get recharged for their afternoon lessons. A box lunch will be provided to the child when the parents pick them up for the break.

Cub Club can only accommodate dietary restrictions such as vegetarian and peanut allergies. If your child needs other types of food, please plan to pack a lunch and provide to Cub Club Assistants at time of check-in.

Children's Chairlift Riding Code of Conduct

A children's chairlift code of conduct helps all of us educate our young skiers and riders about the importance of following chairlift best practices. Please take an active role in educating your child on the following guidelines:

  • Behave and be respectful of your teammates and others when you are in line, loading the chair, riding the chair, and unloading the chair.
  • When you are loading the chair, move promptly from the WAIT HERE board to the LOAD HERE board.
  • At the LOAD HERE board:
    • Hold your poles in your inside hand
    • Look back and to the outside
    • Grab outside of chair as it approaches
    • SIT BACK, HOLD ON, LOOK FORWARD, AND DON'T FOOL AROUND.
  • While you are riding the chair, DO NOT play with skis or boards and DO NOT play with the restraining bar.
  • If the lift stops, DO NOT turn around or play around on the chair.
  • After you unload the chair,
  • Move away from the unloading ramp
  • Stay out of the way of others
  • Wait for your coach or instructor

Children that violate this Code of Conduct will be appropriately reprimanded up to and including termination from our program.

The following websites provide helpful information for preparing your children to ride chairlifts safely: NSAA, Lids on Kids, and Freestyle Terrain.

Please be advised that your child may be riding lifts alone, with other children, or with adults while enrolled in a  lesson. Please advise the Cub Club front desk if you do not wish for your child to ride a chair lift.

Late Pick-Up Fees

Although we love kids, we need to enforce a late pick fee to keep our operations and staff on schedule. This fee is $20 per each 15 minutes a parent or guardian is late to pickup their child.

Please note pickup times:

Full day lunch break pick-up: 11:30 AM

Full day and Child Afternoon Lesson pick up: 2:45 PM

Heading to the mountains with the family can be both a wonderful experience and an organizational challenge. Our goal is to ensure you have a great day out on the slopes and would like to offer some tips to help ensure your day goes smoothly.

Arrive early!

Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes (1 hour on weekends/holidays) before your planned check-in time. Late arrivals may forfeit their reservation..

Dress your child in layers

If the weather changes, they will be able to add or remove clothes as the weather conditions may change. *Please note that Bear Valley Resort does not rent snow clothing or goggles. If you do require additional snow clothing, please visit our on-site retail outlet Reba Sports.*

Make sure your child has eye protection

Sunglasses or goggles for sunny days and goggles for cloudy/snowy days work best.

Helmets

Helmets are included with all Cub Club Full Day lessons (rental, lift ticket and lesson) and are available for rental separately as well.

Make sure your child has had a good night’s rest and breakfast with plenty of water

Your child will be placed in a group based on their ability and paired with kids of like ages. Once on the hill, classes often shift to accommodate different ability levels.

Check the Weather and Road Conditions!

Now that you picked a date, make sure you check the weather and road conditions. Weather can change at a blink of an eye. One day you will be experiencing bluebird weather and next, it’s snowing! Road conditions along Highway 4 should be monitored as well. CalTrans is great at keeping Highway 4 open during the snowy season but you should always be prepared and carry chains. For up-to-date weather and road conditions, check Mattly’s Weather Report and CalTrans.

Miscellaneous:

  • Parents who wish to watch children in class should watch from a distance from outside the fenced-in teaching area to help keep the child's attention on the instructor.  We recommend staying out of sight so your child can focus on the class.
  • Be supportive and encouraging with your child no matter how they do in class.
  • Remember, children all learn at different rates and weather conditions play a big part.
  • Please note that these programs are physically demanding and are not a daycare.

Lesson Cancellation Policy

Within 48 hours of the lesson your reservation is non-refundable. Prior to 48 hours we will refund your reservation less a $25.00 processing fee per person, per day.
