Thanks for the season!

Dear Bear Valley Friends,

First I want to thank you all for your support during the 07/08 season.

Despite low cumulative snow fall (just a bit over last year!) we had excellent snow conditions for most of the season. We were fortunate to get big and cold storms early in January which provided a base and allowed us to open "The Grizz" mid January. While March and April saw little to no snow we had sufficient coverage to enjoy superb late season skiing. For the first time in several years we had perfect weather conditions for the pond skimming. And yes the rumors are correct Jim and I crossed the pond in dry conditions!!

We have one more outstanding snow event, with race and freestyle camp on May 10 & 11th for racers, devos (and parents!). We also were in contact with the California/Nevada snowmobile association to host a snowmobile event mid May. Unfortunately they could not pull it together for this year, perhaps we will try in a future year.

We held 2 public scoping meetings over the last to weekends regarding the proposed actions for the village lift Environmental Analysis. We received some very good and thoughtful comments. For a replay of the video of the first meeting go to http://thepinetree.net/index.php?module=announce&ANN_user_op=view&ANN_id=6439.

I want to close by saying that it was a great experience and real honor to lead Bear Valley Resorts through this winter. I felt tremendous support (I consider critical feedback support as well) by you, our guests, and am proud of the staff which made it all happen.

Stay tuned for news on progress of the village lift EA and village EIR (environmental impact report), as well as improvements for the 2008/09 season.

Have a wonderful and "gemutlicher" summer.

Martin

Martin, can you post a copy of the plans that were presented at the scoping sessions on the website? Thanks.

First, let me say kudos on the plans for improvements. While the video is a little difficult to track, the map makes sense, and I think I generally understand the concept. Layout of the village lift, the new Bear Top lodge, and the reconfiguration for Super Cub all seem like terrific ideas. Taken together, the proposals should go a long way towards easing congestion in some of the mountain's more crowded areas by spreading skiers out.

The one thing that seems to be missing from the plan is improvements to lift speed for the mountain's steeper areas--notably Kuma and Grizzly. While I understand budgets are constrained, a high speed quad to replace Bear and Kuma would be a terrific addition to the mountain. It would be even better if there was a high speed quad from Grizzly bottom to Bear top, with a middle loading station, but I bet such a lift would be extremely expensive. While quads in these areas wouldn't open any new terrain, they would make the uphill ride safer, faster and more comfortable, and would make it easier for families to ski together. And with less time spent on lifts, we skiers could cover even more vertical in a day. We can dream, can't we?

Keep up the good work, and please be sure to use the website to keep us posted on progress over the summer and through the year. Can't wait until next season to see what you have accomplished.

Greetings Martin,

I just finished watching the scoping session online and would really like to receive the scoping letter (and be included in the comment process) that the forest service official was mentioning during the meeting. I don't know if it is too late to become involved, but I hope not. I took my first turns at Bear Valley when I was three and have been skiing and snowboarding there off and on for 28 years. Please respond and let me know if I would be able to participate.

Cheers!
