This is it (04/15/12)

Old news, but once again I wanted to thank everybody for coming out to play in this wonderful winter wonderland and especially to all whom offered up such kind and thoughtful sentiments for the staffs efforts for this season.  The Team truly worked their magic every day/night of the season to keep it together providing a fantastic season.

What a great closing weekend – oodels of  new snow just before the weekend, cold temps to preserve the quality, a positive sunny forecast, a great reggae band and BEER.  Saturday was in the top 10 busiest days of the season.  I trust despite the disappointments of no pond skimming – a good time was had by all.

A really, really brief excuse on why Pond Skimming didn’t happen.  We started building the pond on schedule (Tuesday), by mid day Wednesday the pit was in place but now it was snowing heavily.  Then the forecast – lots of snow, wind, lows in the teens & highs barely above freezing.  Try to image busting up & skimming off 2500 square feet of ice 2 to 3” thick off the pond & then missing one piece (think titanic).  So here we go again = Safety First.   Just think, for next year there will be that much more anticipation!

It never ceased to amaze me how the Media can manipulate and spin the weather and conditions.  While I understand the need to provide attention getting news & headlines, I sometime question whether it’s truly fair and balanced!  In our case, we are especially sensitive and subjected to the media whims as we don’t have the deep advertising pockets of most of our competitors that can get out there & combat negativity.  Our day is out there though!

Many have asked it I will continue to blog after we close and through the summer -  yes of course!

Cheers all and have a great summer – jim

HI Richard – thanks for the lesson on 101 blogging and your commitment to fair and balanced media reporting. I learned along time ago and I can’t remember who’s quote it was but it went something like this – Never do battle with someone who buys their ink by the barrel. Have a great summer! – Jim

Jim- Just remember when you criticize the media that some members of the media own residences in Bear Valley.

Jennifer Smith of KXTV 10 in Sacramento is one of them and she never fails to sing Bear Valley’s praises when she gets a chance.

I myself am also a member of the press as I am a sports writer with the Lodi News Sentinel in Lodi, CA.

We always try to be fair and balanced in our reporting and we do not just act out of whims for the sake of sensationalism or commercialism.

We do have ethics and take pride in our work as professionals well as being residents of Bear Valley.

In addition, when you edited out your controversial comments in your earlier blog, “The GM Takes a Hit” after several of us, including myself, made some blog comments about it, you did not also edit out our comments on that issue along with it as you should have.

People who read that particular blog and see our comments will wonder what we were talking about because they don’t have the benefit of seeing your controversial comments in the first place that triggered the responses.

    Sincerely yours,
    Richard Banas II

  3. What an amazing staff through all the weather vagueries of this season. My hat (helmet!) is off to you all for greeting the difficulties of this Winter with grace and always a warm heart to us, the customers.

Thank you all. I had a great season despite the fact that the snow refused to drop for months on end.

    Hey Jim,

THANKS! This closing weekend was about as perfect as you could have order up! The crowd was good, the weather was fantastic; as was the snow. Good sun, good snow and the vibes on Saturday – what can you say! Very good send off of winter 2011-2012 (kiss my ass winter 2011-2012).

  6. I wanted to thank the Bear Valley staff for being so friendly, professional and amazing through a really challenging year. This was my first season as a pass holder – I came up to BV in 2010, fell in love with the place & people and my partner and I bought a cabin in Camp Connell! Seeing how you all dealt with this year highlighted that “yes, that was the right decision”. :-)

Please give the staff my open hearted thanks, they are all awesome. Looking forward to next year (with more snow, at the right time!)

Congrats on a good closing, Jim. I had a blast up there everytime I rode. The staff was solid throughout the season, even when the chips were down. Looking forward to seeing what next season brings! I hope to be healed up and strong by next winter. I will still have the limp when you see me again, but this time I will be able to ski. No more snowboards for me! I should never had tried it. My kids warned me that I would end up being a gaper. They wont even try it after watching me. I am gonna need some ski lessons next time around, so hopefully you will have some time to show me some things, or set me up in your ski school.
Have a fantastic summer and will look for you down in the tropics.
Thanks for everything and looking forward to your summer blog
